         The Yellow Wallpaper (Symbolism)

In the story " The Wallpaper" it has many examples of symbolism. The wallpaper was an example, the house another, as well as the nursery. All of these things have symbols in this short story.

First off the wallpaper was the main symbol in this story, because the wallpaper affected her directly, in the beginning it was very unpleasant to her. The wallpaper was torn, ripped, an ugly yellow, and in no kind of pattern. She would stare at the wallpaper to try and figure out the pattern, she even saw a ghost within the pattern, but that was only in certain lighting.  The woman inside the pattern apparently would crawl and stoop looking for an escape behind the wallpaper. But not only that, the wallpaper also symbolizes mental restrictions that were placed on women by men during this time. Which leads me to my last point of how people often relate the color yellow to sickness, which in this case I consider her having a mental illness.
Another symbol in this story would be the house, The house is a symbol of bondage, because she doesn't go outside of the housed rarely outside of the upper room. the woman in the story viewed this house as "haunted" and "something queer" about it. She would spend all her time inside the room of the house, she would often write in her journal as a release. She would also spend her time looking out one of her two windows that were covered with bars. This directs back to her mental illness.
Lastly, the nursery is an example of symbolism. This showed how John treated his wife. he treated her as if she were an infant, and unable to make her own decisions. Her husband John was a physician, so apparently he  knew her diagnosis and knew what was needed to treat it. her husband took care of her every need and never let her do it for herself. So this is why I chose the nursery as an example of symbolism in this story.
In conclusion, the wallpaper, the house, and the nursery were all examples of symbolism in this short story. Because they either represented bondage, insanity, or dependability.
